Herb of the Month - Meet Yarrow!

Yarrow (Achillea millefolium Asteraceae) is one of our oldest herbs. Named after the ancient Greek hero, Achilles, it was used to staunch the flow of blood from his troops' wounds in the Trojan War. Yarrow has been used on many battlefields, thus why its common names are allheal and bloodwort. In need of a first aid herb? Turn to yarrow. It's used for a wide variety of acute conditions, including the common cold, flu, fevers, hypertension, painful menstruation, bleeding, and pain. Having blood-regulating properties, yarrow is commonly used to treat menstrual issues, such as heavy and painful bleeding, typically caused by poor pelvic circulation and weakness. It's also a great digestive remedy, helping alleviate colic and indigestion, improve appetite, and stimulate bile flow and liver function. Yarrow is commonly found in bitter blends for consumption prior to eating. Luckily, yarrow grows abundantly along roadsides, in fields and hills, canyon grounds, waste areas, and even some lawns. If you're out on a hike and get stung by a bee or get a cut, just pick some nearby yarrow (as long as it hasn't been sprayed with poisons!), chew it up, and place it on the wounded area for a quick pain relief and to stop bleeding. To find yarrow out in the wild, look for flower heads that are arranged in tight, flat clusters at the top of the green fern-like foliage. Each cluster has one or more flower heads consisting of 20-25 flowers. There will most likely be bees enjoying their aroma.

"To ferment your own food is to lodge an eloquent protest (...) against the homogenization of flavors and food experiences now rolling like a great, undifferential lawn across the globe. It's also a declaration of independence from an economy that would much prefer we were all passive consumers of its commodities, rather than creators of unique products expressive of ourselves and the places where we live" M. Pollan
